Shorts 1: On the World From Above (2017)
This short film was part of AND Festival 2017.
From the synchronized cameras on the planes of World War One to the UAV drones we have come to know today, Paul Virilio says “the technologies of cinema and warfare have developed a fatal interdependence”.
Through this shorts programme we reflect on the age of the aerial image, the impact of drone cinematography and the proliferation of satellite imagery where technologies like GPS, Google Maps, and Google Earth have come to mediate every aspect of contemporary life. Featuring amongst others archival footage from In an Airship Above the Battlefield (1919) and the recent short films from Josh Begley with Best of Luck with the Wall, As Birds Flying (2016) Dir. Heba Amin and Project X, Dir’s. Laura Poitras and Henrik Moltke.
