As-Salam wal Hub \ Oreet Ashery (2011)
Oreet Ashery is an interdisciplinary artist who is interested in the politics of gender and authenticity. Bringing new meaning to the phrase “cult of the new celebrity”, As-Salam wal Hub sawher remake a small army of volunteers in the image of a man loved and hated in equal measure in Liverpool, Ringo Starr. The raw material of this group transformation was the participants own hair, cut short with the help of Liverpool stylists Voodou for Him and reapplied, under the watchful eye of the artist to form Ringo’s distinct widow’s peak, beard and moustache. Dressed in black, decked out in sunglasses and making the peace sign, the ‘Starrs’ walked from Voodou to Pier Head where they convened on the roof terrace of Matou restaurant for a special performance.
