The Humble Market at WE PLAY Expo (2012)
The Humble Market headed to Preston for the WE PLAY Expo – a whole weekend of unmissable free events in Preston that celebrated our region’s unique contribution to London 2012.
Coinciding with the London 2012 Olympics closing ceremony and handover to Rio 2016, The Humble Market brought the Brazilian North East to the UK’s North West in a playful process of real-time engagement.
Through interactive stalls, tricks and tinkering, The Humble Market challenged notions of theatre and technology as performers and audiences pushed the borders of urban life, identity and social “under-standing”. The Humble Market asked us to consider: what do we value most when faced with tyranny of choice and the challenges of global consumerism?
Artistic concept, developers and lead artists: Persis-Jade Maravala, Alastair Eilbeck, James Bailey and Zecora Ura Theatre Network.
Commissioned and co-produced by: Abandon Normal Devices, FACT and WE PLAY Expo. Funded by Arts Council and the Legacy Trust.
