Duane Hopkins \ Sunday (2009)

Sunday was an exhibition sited at Open Eye Gallery.

Duane Hopkins has received widespread critical acclaim for his distinctive portrayals of British rural life notably with his award-winning short films and stunning debut feature Better Things.

Sunday was a new exhibition where Hopkins abandoned the standard film narrative and explored film’s grammatical possibilities. Focusing on British youth and the relationship between identity, psychology and environment. Hopkins captures the nuances and subtleties in the shifting interactions of the main characters, suggesting a complex meditation between their personal inner reality and the external world, and creating an unnerving psychological tension.

A special screening of Duane Hopkins’s feature film – Better Things was programmed in The Box at FACT to coincide with the exhibition at the Open Eye Gallery. Better Things, is a revealing and poetic portrait of rural England looking at love, life, loss and intoxication.

Following a successful transition from short films to his debut feature, and critically acclaimed installation work, Duane Hopkins gave AND audiences insight into his creative vision and working process in a masterclass.
