Formation \ Various Artists (2017)

Four Sheffield-based artists transformed the old decommissioned petrol station into a site of material investigation through a series of radical statements, moving image projects, and tours.

Beginning with the themes of mineral and material, Formation challenged geological, technical and socio-political conditions, investigating the implications of industrial mining and extraction processes, rare earth minerals, and their connection to global supply chains. Across undulating and unfolding strata, earthly matter weaved into narratives from the deep.

Featured artists: Rose Butler, Ruth Levene, Victoria Lucas and Ian Nesbitt.

Formation was part of Making Ways, a new programme supported by Sheffield Culture Consortium through Arts Council England to showcase, celebrate and develop the exceptional contemporary visual art produced in the city.
