State of Becoming / Allison Kudla

18 September – 06 December 2016

State of Becoming (Study No. 2 of the exhibition Seeing The Forest Through The Trees) takes its form from the mathematical patterns expressed by ‘phyllotaxy’, which in botany is the natural arrangement of leaves on a plant stem.

The leaves of many plants arrange the growth of their leaves in a spiral pattern equivalent to the Golden Angle or Fibonacci series. It has been posited that such growth patterns are not due to genetic or developmental forces but rather to physical laws that underpin all matter in our universe. In this installation, this

mathematical pattern is laid flat in space but not in time, giving the viewer an opportunity to look on at various states of development of seeds, each existing in its own microscopic universe within a swirling nebula of life.

The growth and development of each seedling is coupled to the macroscopic progression of the mathematics expressed in the underlying phyllotaxic pattern.

Exhibited as part of the group show Seeing The Forest Through The Trees at AND Festival 2015.
