The Locus of Anxiety / Steven Ounanian
The Locus of Anxiety is a work in progress which maps the cultural, psychological and technological catalysts for anxiety through an ongoing dialog with experts and the general public.
Artist Steven Ounanian aimed to show at the AND Fair that an anxiety mechanism is built into modern consumer culture; from the design of products, to the production of mainstream cinema, human anxiety is a currency which is spent on catharsis.
But to actually locate the source of anxiety is somewhat a contradiction in terms: anxiety describes a fear without any definite object for the fear to be atributed. Anxiety is class specific, culture specific and historically specific – it shits its locus constantly.
